Suspense around the Corner

Who remembers the best scene of Stanley Kubrick’s “Shining”? We see the little boy Danny on his Kettler pedal car driving from corridor to corridor. Over parquet, over carpets, turning one corner after another. It is one of the most exciting scenes ever made. And it was the final breakthrough of the Steadicam. Because with that device a cameraman could follow his subject without shaking camera. Watch how ingeniously simple the sound design was executed. And how the audience feels that something very bad is about to happen, that comes closer with every turn we make. Two previous blogposts were inspired by the same theme, but just forgive us.
